acneOnce you hit your twenties and thirties, you assume most of the issues you dealt with throughout your teens are now behind you. So how irritating is it when you realize you haven’t quite shaken the nightmare of acne? If this is something you suffer from, you aren’t alone. Many adult men are forced to continue to deal with the acne that plagued them in their teens, but luckily there are ways to deal with it.

Unfortunately, the number one factor that determines who gets acne is genetic predisposition. During adolescence, your sebaceous glands begin releasing a larger amount of sebum, which is what causes acne in the first place. Your skin type and genetics play a part in determining how much sebum is released, and whether the secreted amount will continue to be enough to cause acne. But overall, genetics play a major role, as opposed to diet and environment. In fact, contrary to popular belief, diet has little to no effect on your skin. Despite being told growing up that too many chocolate bars will give you pimples, this is simply a myth.

Another more unknown cause of adult acne is the use of anabolic steroids. The steroids commonly used by athletes and bodybuilders to build muscle mass cause a very distinct type of acne, typically appearing on the back and chest. This type of acne tends to disappear once the use of steroids is discontinued. Yet another reason to not use steroids!

The two most important ingredients that you should ensure are in your skin care product are benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. Benzoyl peroxide works to eliminate bacteria that causes infection, which is why it can sometimes sting when it’s applied. Salicylic acid works to unclog pores, removing the nastiness that can embed itself in your skin. These two ingredients working together are the most effective combination when it comes to fighting acne. If you find your acne to be more persistent than most, however, you may need to speak to your doctor to have them prescribe more powerful medication.

If you’re looking for a less harsh and more natural way to get rid of acne, tea tree oil has been proven to be quite an effective solution. Look for products containing this soothing ingredient, with anywhere from 5-15% concentration, depending on the severity of your acne.

Other factors, such as stress management, adequate hydration and plenty of sleep, are also great ways to help improve the look of your skin.

Also, be careful while shaving! If you find your skin is prone to pimples, shaving over them can cause major irritation. Take your time and don’t be too rough with your razor.

Above all, be patient! Your acne isn’t going to resolve itself overnight. Once you find the right treatments that work with your skin type, you should start seeing results in 1 to 3 months.
